Meltdown is released!
Publish Date: Sun, 06 Apr 2008 15:30:00 GMT
OK here it is, the first public beta of Meltdown!
Scenario
In this map we see the GDF trying to put an end to a major Strogg facility located in a once grand city. In order to reach the facility the GDF must first disable the shield generator to by pass the numerous shielded barriers leading to the facility. Once done the GDF must overload the facility's main reactor with additional energy cells, 2 in total should be sufficient for total meltdown.
Objectives
1. Destroy the Strogg Shield Generator to gain access to the facility.
2. Hack the Strogg Security Controls to gain access to the energy cell.
3. Deliver the energy cell to the reactor intake to cause total meltdown.
Grayfox Testimonial
Publish Date: Thu, 03 Apr 2008 12:30:00 GMT
Primarily a gathering of the BF2 players on behalf of a long standing member of the GN community who will be sorely missed until his return, but secondary a testament to the strength of friendships built online here at GamersNation, we (the GN community) will be gathering on GamersNation Ventrilo Saturday evening for a night of good 'ol Battlefield 2 in honour of our friend Gray+Fox.
No doubt there will be much banter and laughter along with bits and pieces of "OMG you TART!". BF2 players out there, please feel free to join us in the Battlefield 2 channel of GamersNation's Ventrilo.
id: hardcore gamers switching to consoles
Publish Date: Thu, 20 Mar 2008 19:00:00 GMT
The high-profile debate about the worrisome state of PC gaming continues unabated, id Software's Steve Nix has had a turn over on Games Industry.biz. He appears to consider that while the console market has grown to the point where it cannot be ignored, id remain committed to PC gaming and are confident it can support their games. While hardly inspiring optimism for PC gaming, it puts a damper on the diatribe we've been hearing from the more hot-headed corners.
If it's optimism you want, have a read of the comment from Draginol of Stardock. Their latest game, Sins of a Solar Empire, has topped the US games charts despite a dearth of any hype (they were underestimated to the point that they couldn't even get a European distributor), no copy protection and low production costs. They say it is simply due to making games with a normal business perspective: "satisfying the people willing to spend money on your product and less effort on making what others perceive as hot".
'Ridiculous and Foolish' to say PC gaming is in decline - SOE
Publish Date: Sat, 15 Mar 2008 14:30:00 GMT
Game Daily asked Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley about the state of PC gaming:
Quote:
"It's ridiculous and foolish to say that PC gaming [is in decline]. I've seen some of the dumbest quotes out there about the business [falling apart]. It's just not true. The simple truth is the online business is picking up in a huge way. If you're able to add in ? and NPD is beginning to track this stuff ? the digital sales and regular sales and subscription money and all that stuff, the PC gaming industry is at its strongest point in its history period."
Sweeney: 'PCs are good for anything, just not games'
Publish Date: Mon, 10 Mar 2008 18:30:00 GMT
Just a few weeks ago the PC Gaming Alliance was announced, with Epic one of the partners. Today however TG Daily has Epic's Tim Sweeny saying "PCs are good for anything, just not games." By anything he seems to mean "Facebook, MySpace, pirating music or whatever."
Granted much of his reasoning stems from integrated graphics, which Mark Rein criticised even at the Alliance's press conference at GDC. However gamers do not buy PC's with integrated graphics.
Potential new gamers may lose out on their first PC, and any trip around your local PC World or Curry's will prove PC makers are marketing blatantly inadequate specifications as gaming rigs. But the problem there is education combined with the "minimum specification" fibbing which give credentials to the false marketing claims. What's more, AMD have recently raised the bar on integrated graphics substantially. This should force Intel to finally bring out the integrated performance they have been promising for years, and both CPU makers have been hinting about etching a GPU onto the CPU die.
This comes just a few weeks after CliffyB's infamous comments to MTV which were met rather unfavourably. Mark Rein has also weighed in, though he bites the hand that fed more softly and had the sense to backtrack.
Many traditionally PC developers appear to be switching their focus over to consoles, but few seem to be as determined to burn their bridges as they go.
Tech firms join forces to promote PC gaming
Publish Date: Wed, 20 Feb 2008 20:00:00 GMT
Several PC industry heavyweights including AMD, Dell, Intel, Microsoft, and Nvidia have teamed up to promote PC gaming. The "PC Gaming Alliance" was announced at GDC today. Ars Technica have the best of the coverage I've come across, though they note some concern that "While the group seems to have a solid grasp of what's wrong with PC gaming, it didn't put forth any compelling ideas about what to do about them."
The announcement comes on the heels of NPD's gaming sales figures projecting doom and gloom for PC gaming and various other notorious news snippets of late. It's perhaps worth repeating that those NPD figures have arguably been widely misreported, while the likes of Steam and World of Warcraft (largely excluded from the NPD figures, which were intended for retail businesses) are evidently more than happy with the current situation.
Another comment bemoaning the state of PC gaming came at GDC, from Peter Molyneux. There's some sort of prequel to a forthcoming interview on GamesIndistry.biz where he's pointing the finger between the overwhelming successes of World of Warcraft and the Sims, and the lack of innovation from developers. Makes a nice change from industry types blaming gamers anyway.
